The Beat Generation was a literary movement started by a group of authors whose work explored and influenced American culture and politics in the post-World War II era.

The bulk of their work was published and popularized throughout the 1950s.

The adjective "beat" could colloquially mean "tired" or "beaten down" within the African-American community of the period and had developed out of the image "beat to his socks", but Kerouac appropriated the image and altered the meaning to include the connotations "upbeat", "beatific", and the musical association of being "on the beat", and "the Beat to keep" from the Beat Generation poem.

The origins of the Beat Generation can be traced to Columbia University and the meeting of Kerouac, Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, Hal Chase and others.

The core group of Beat Generation authors – Herbert Huncke, Allen Ginsberg, William S.

Burroughs, Lucien Carr, and Jack Kerouac – met in 1944 in and around the Columbia University campus in New York City.

The mag man's friend and 'Rolling Stone' contributor Lewis Mac Adams was the first to take a stab at it in 2003, but found himself out in the cold after he handed over a first draft with a few hundred pages for Wenner to read.

Rich Cohen, another contributor to 'Rolling Stone,' tried his hand at capturing Wenner in 2011 and even produced a book proposal before being similarly strong-armed by a suddenly silent subject.

'There was a lot of worry about making that claim, and Mick wanted it taken out. But I had it dead-to-rights, with three in-the-room sources.'Wenner is not speaking to Hagan in the wake of the book and stated how upset he is in multiple interviews.'I gave Joe time and access in the hope he would write a nuanced portrait about my life and the culture Rolling Stone chronicled,' Wenner told The New York Times.'Rock and roll set me and my generation free musically, socially and politically.

You got a free pass to take any picture you like.' ' This drug usage is tied back to her closeted sexuality in the book, something that Wenner was also dealing with at the time.'Leibovitz said she didn't know she was gay, nor did she think of Wenner as gay.

Sex, like drugs, was just another opportunity,' writes Hagan.

Hagan said he ran into the same issues, claiming that Wenner had issues early on when presented with accounts that were critical of him or salacious, and said that he had also wanted to control the narrative as it pertained to his sexual history.

Wenner was closeted for a good portion of his life, and enjoyed dalliances with both men and women during his first marriage.
